Construction Unearths Family History in Historic Springfield

Crew Installing Irrigation Finds Buried Gravestone

Springfield Historic Gravestone Found by TerraWise HomesTerraWise Homes has been leading the revival of new homes in historic Springfield since 2013. During that time, they have built several homes bringing forward the latest energy efficient net-zero energy technology while maintaining the character of the neighborhood by designing homes that blend perfectly with the historic architecture. Recently, they went from creating new family histories to turning up a chapter of forgotten history for one of Springfield’s early families.

According to company president Melody Shacter, a new irrigation system was being installed at the TerraWise Homes’ model at 1221 North Liberty Street when the crew uncovered an old gravestone of Martha H. Troeger. Shacter contacted the Springfield Improvement Association and Archives and their historian Jeff Gardner researched the family.

Troeger is actually buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.   She was a nursing student and nearly 26 when she died in 1925. Gardner is attempting to determine why Martha’s family had two headstones made for her, and why one came to rest at this location; however, the property where the TerraWise model is located was originally her parent’s home. Gardner’s research led to a few of Troeger’s relatives and he took the lead in trying to make contact. He was finally successful in early June.

“I made three calls to people I had determined were relatives of our Martha H. Troeger,” said Gardner. “I was able to connect with one of them, Frederica Mathewes-Green, who lives in Baltimore. Her grandmother, Esther Viola Troeger Oetjen, was Martha’s sister. She is very excited about the find and wishes to acquire the gravestone on behalf of her family. She also has a sister who lives in Jacksonville, so this will likely be its next, final resting place.”

Gardner, along with Melody and David Shacter, made a presentation of the gravestone to the heirs on Saturday, June 17 at the TerraWise Homes model.

“Between completed homes and those currently under construction there are now over 30 TerraWise Homes in Springfield,” said Shacter. “Our office is also here on Main Street and we are proud to be a part of the revival of this great neighborhood and now to play a small part in the preservation of its storied history.”

The Satilla Butterfly Revival

Re-Introducing A Classic Butterfly Roof Design

Last year, we added a “Butterfly” roof design as an option on a few of our home offerings. Two buyers immediately were enamored with the exterior appearance and the interior room sloping heights. These homes are now complete and causing excitement at our Cedarbrook community.

The butterfly roof has existed in this country for several decades although it’s hard to find any examples in our area. Melody and I thought it would be distinctive to offer it as an option.  Our first one completed is a Satilla Modern for buyers in Cedarbrook.

A “butterfly roof” is essentially a roof formed from an inversion of a standard sloped design. The two roof surfaces slope down from opposing edges to a valley in the center. It resembles the raised wings of a butterfly and therefore is usually referred to as a butterfly roof, although alternate names have included a ”V roof” and a “London Roof” according to Wikipedia.

Many observers of housing design in this country credit the butterfly roof to be the creation of William Krisel and Dan Palmer in Palm Springs, California during the late 1950s. Beginning in 1957, these two partners created nearly 2,000 houses in a series of developments known as the Alexander Tract. Historian Alan Hess describes their work as “the largest Modernist housing subdivision in the United States.” But Krisel is quick to point out that he was not the originator of this form.

Wikipedia research further shows that Butterfly Roofs have historic beginnings, at least dating back to the great French architect, Le Corbusier, who first used this structure in his design of a vacation home in Chile called Maison Errazuriz in 1930. Shortly after, in 1933, the Czech-born architect used this same form on a house in Japan featured in Architectural Record magazine in 1934. The celebrated German-born architect, Marcel Breuer, used this same form on his Geller House in Long Island, New York in 1945.

So, the Butterfly roof is not new, but it is certainly creating a lot of new excitement in one Jacksonville community. Stop by the Cedarbrook model and join one of our team for a tour of the community to see these cool new retro home designs.

A Tale Of Two Satillas

Same Floor Plan – Two Unique Homes

We are focused on innovation at TerraWise Homes. Around here that means across the spectrum of home building from design to energy efficiency and everything in between.

One of the things I like to do is work with our architects to design different elevations (the outside look of a home) for most all our floor plans. This allows us to offer great plans in a variety of architectural styles making the same house look very different from the outside. That is particularly important in communities like Cedarbrook to keep the street scene varied while offering buyers the opportunity to select the most popular plans.

Satilla Craftsman & Modern Cedarbrook TerraWise Homes

Satilla Craftsman(L) & Modern(R.)

We just finished two of our new Satilla homes in Cedarbrook that really demonstrate how TerraWise Homes goes way beyond the typical builder approach of just flipping the garage or other minor cosmetic changes. As you can see from the photo here of these two side-by-side Satillas (candid shot with one household moving in and our team working to finish up the other), there is a lot more going on than just having the garages on the right and the left.

Yes, these two homes have the exact same floor plan. But way different looks to say the least. The one on the right has the new Modern elevation “Butterfly Roof” while the house on the left has the Craftsman elevation.  Hard to believe but truly the very same plan.

We will post more photos of these two houses here on the blog now that they are completed and the move-in clutter is over. You can also drive through Cedarbrook to check them. This community is fast becoming a neighborhood now and well past the “pioneering” phase after just a few months. Having all the unique TerraWise Homes’ elevations is really giving Cedarbrook a special look from most communities in the Oceanway area.  Top that off with many being Net-Zero Energy homes and it’s also one of Jacksonville’s most innovative new home communities.
